South Africa faced a decisive 2-0 defeat against Mali in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This loss marks South Africa as the first Southern African country to be defeated in this year's AFCON. Despite dominating the first half, Bafana Bafana missed a golden chance to lead when striker Percy Tau's 18th-minute penalty, awarded after a VAR check revealed an elbow on Evidence Makgopa, was poorly executed, denying South Africa the opportunity to seize the lead. Tau blasted the penalty well off target and squandered South Africa's opportunity to take the lead. In the second half, Bafana Bafana were outplayed when Mali's captain Hamari Traore broke the deadline and scored to put Mali in the lead. Lassine Sinayoko wasted no time and added another one six minutes later to seal the win. Meanwhile, Mali leads Group E, surpassing Namibia based on goal difference after Namibia's 1-0 win against Tunisia.
