The Zambia Boxing team is brimming with enthusiasm as they prepare for the Dakar Olympic qualifiers leading to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The event is scheduled to unfold from September 9th to 15th in Dakar, Senegal. Coach Wisdom Mudenda, speaking from OYDC Zambia - Sports Development Centre, where the team is currently training, expresses confidence in their progress and anticipates a strong performance due to their dedicated efforts. "We've initiated a joint international training camp with the Botswana team, which began yesterday. We've already conducted several joint training sessions as part of our rigorous preparations for the Olympic qualifiers," Coach Mudenda explained. The team, comprising four male and four female boxers, has been in a residential camp for the past three days. Margaret Tembo competes in the flyweight category, Mary Mwango in the featherweight category, Hildah Ng'andwe in bantamweight, and Felistus Nkandu in the lightweight category. Patrick Chinyemba, the current African champion, competes in the flyweight category, Mwango Mwale in the bantamweight category, while the current lightweight African champion, Andrew Chilata, and Stephen Zimba are in the welterweight category. Margaret, the reigning light flyweight African champion, exudes confidence in the team's preparations and the guidance provided by the coaching staff. "I've been diligently preparing for these Olympic qualifiers and I'm eagerly looking forward to securing a spot in the Paris games next year, with my eyes set on a gold medal in Dakar," Margaret shared. "I have been to major games such as the Commonwealth Games, African Championships, and I am among the first female boxing athletes to go to the Commonwealth Games," she adds. Despite acknowledging the tough competition, the coach remains optimistic about the team's prospects to qualify all their boxers. The team is set to depart for Senegal on Tuesday, September 5th, at 15:00, via Ethiopian Airlines, arriving in Dakar on Wednesday, September 6th, at 17:00, three days before the start of the competition.
