Egypt once again asserted its dominance in African Chess, emerging as the victor at the recently concluded AYCC held on their home turf. Egypt, with a contingent of 187 participants, secured an impressive 25 medals, including 9 golds, making them the undisputed champions of the 2023 AYCC. Botswana clinched both gold and silver, securing the second position, while Kenya earned gold and bronze, landing them in the third spot on the medal table. Algeria's performance, with 4 silvers and one bronze, placed them in fifth position, followed by Madagascar in fourth with a single gold medal. Representing Zambia were: Atusayi Sichali in under 8 girls, Jacob Kapembwa in under 8 open, Kisa Sichali in under 10 girls, Tumelo Lwenyeka, Luka Shields, and Shaurya Davane in under 10 open, Siamalongo Sindaza in under 12 girls, Joshua Sauti and Ved Rao in under 12 open, Noah Francis in under 14 open, Victoria Mweetwa in under 14 girls, Namasiku Haambayi in under 16 girls, Stephen Mofya in under 16 open, Joseph Handiya in under 18 open, Zangowanachipwila Nshikokola, and Naomi Mwale in under 18 girls respectively. Unfortunately, the team couldn't win any medals despite their effort. In total, North African countries, Egypt and Algeria, claimed an impressive 30 medals, leaving just 6 for the rest of Africa. Uganda wrapped up the medal statistics table with a silver.
